The Porta di San Martino stands majestically along the road leading to the historic centre. It is named after the nearby convent of San Martino, which was destroyed during World War II. The gate was secured during restorations carried out in 1954.
The Porta di San Martino is part of the first circuit of defensive walls, built at the initiative of the Caetani family, who took possession of Itri around 1250. To this day, the ancient holes used to support wooden doors, which were closed at night, can be observed. A small sentry box on the left side of the gate has also been preserved, serving as both a defensive position and a night entrance for latecomers who wished to avoid spending the night outside the protection offered by the imposing castle.
