Located along the ancient Appian Way, the Museum of Brigandage in Itri tells a story interwoven with culture, tradition, and memory.
Opened in 2003, it serves as both a museum and a memorial, offering a space for reflection and learning. Here, the controversial past of brigandage, often overlooked or stigmatized, is brought to light through a critical and multidimensional approach.
On the heights of Mount Fusco rises the majestic Sanctuary; the first references to the structure date back to 1147, mentioning a donation made by a notary from Itri and his wife to Abbot Riccardo of the monastery for the restoration of the small church, which was then entrusted to Brother Bartolomeo. It was only in 1491 that the Sanctuary took on its current form.
Perched atop Sant’Angelo Hill, the Medieval Castle of Itri stands in all its majestic grandeur. Originally, it was not designed as a noble residence but as a fortress to guard against enemy advances by sea and land.
